Private Herbert Phillip Thompson

Herbert Thompson was born in 1895, the son of Phillip and Mary Ann Thompson of Stickford. Herbert enlisted in Spilsby into the 2/4th Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 26th September 1917 at the Battle of Polygon Wood, a small wood about four miles east of Ypres, in Belgium (third Battle of Ypres also known as Passchendaele). Herbert is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He is also remembered on his father’s grave in the churchyard in Stickford.
