Private William Burt Toynton

William Burt Toynton was born in 1895 in Stickford. He was the son of James Walter and Mary Toynton. Private William Burt Toynton, known as Burt, joined the 6th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment. He enlisted in Hitchin, Herts. The 6th Battalion was a “service” battalion, raised specifically for the duration of the war in August 1914, as part of ‘K1’ – Lord Kitchener’s first call to arms for 100,000 men to fight for their country against the King’s enemies. William died of wounds on 19th July 1916 aged 21 at the Battle of the Somme. He is remembered at the St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen.
